Just the brains, ma'am

Lame Dragnet reference for a gimpy armed zed. Still on the late night schedule for updates.

Grrrarh

(I'm still running behind schedule)

This is a nice mini from Cold War miniatures' Downtown pack.

Made it!

Almost missed it, but I made it. Today at least.

Don't let the teddy bear fool ya

Now with bonus cat hair. Quick Zed with company here.

Skinny Little Bugger

With visitors coming in from the weekend I've been running around trying to get the place clean. So here is a quick Zed sans basing.

It'll be based for the roundup photo at week's end.

Big, Green, and Ugly is No Way to Go through Death Boy

Those red strands on his right hand are supposed to be gore of some kind. I didn't do much with it.

Zedicus Prime

This is the first zombie I painted. I actually got this guy free at Gen Con a couple yearsw ago. I can't remember the name of the booth, but you had to recite a phrase from thier website and then you got a zombie.

Go Fetch

New photo setting, doesn't look at sharp to me.

Week Two Roundup

I adjusted the bases this week, replace my brown ink wash with purple ink and the dry grass flock with a mixed blend. It looks much better to me.

Rude Awakening

It's survivor saturday!

Bad enough when the dead rise. Even worse when you're trying to survive the apocolypse in your lavender sheep pajamas.

There was a problem with her left eye and in the end I couldn't clean it up enough. So I figure in her struggle to get some weapons she got a black eye.

Almost Had Him

If the head wound had been a little deeper he wouldn't be walking around in those overalls.

Not my favorite mini or paint job.

Whaaaaasssssup?!

What up Z?

Nothin' much, shamblin' 'round, munchin' some brains.

True, true.

Is that a gang sign he's flashing?

If so, he's the hippest zed this side of Beaumont St.

Westside Zs for life... err... yeah.

What a Mess!

When a Zed goes up against a swordsman and comes out on top this is what you're left with.

First Down of the Dead

The severed head tucked under the arm is a great touch.

Week One Roundup

One week down! I printed out a page of a blue-white gradient I got from here: http://www.cheddarmongers.org/prod/blog/uncle_phil/uncle_phils_miniature_photography_guide

It looks a bit better than my tan felt.

Send More Brains!

With one hand still clutching his briefcase and the other forever raised to his ear, this is one sad, hungry zombie.

Caught Red-Handed

From a range of 'Rage' zombies. I'm not a fan of fast zombies, but I can use the distinctive beastial style of this mini for some other special purpose amongst the horde.

Daaaate......daaaaaate

The blending came out better on the skin, but the clothes could use another pass.

I'm going to try a more neutral background next week.

Pineapple Shorts

The shorts turned out ok, but the pineapples are hard to see. I like the mini but I'm second guessing my basework. Either way the base needs touching up.

Right On, Right On!

One down! Lots to go.

I look forward to seeing how my skills improve as time goes on. Any comments or tips are welcome.

I'm happy with how the freehand trefoil on the tee shirt turned out (though it should be flipped top to bottom).

Zombie Painting Central

This is my painting station which I will use to tackle the project. My primary paints are Vallejo Game Color and their line of inks. I've also got a smattering of Reaper Master Series paint the kind folks at Reaper gifted to me when I was done there years ago visiting their factory in Texas.

The black and white craft paints I use to touch up primer and dry brush my black base coat.

I use a wet palette made from a old Tupperware container and my good brushes are Windsor and Newton Series 7 brushes. The mixing board is the side of a Cheerios box. Once I retire I plan on selling it to the Museum of Modern Art.

I really should have cleaned my water jar for the pictures.

The Daunting Task

Ten trays with twenty eight slots each equals a lot of work (even with a few empty slots). I picked up a few spues of plastic zombies at Historicon last weekend and I'm not sure if I'll put them together normally or if I'll modify them for some special purpose.

I primed my zombies black (except one tray which I got early) and primed my survivors white. My hope is the survivors will be brighter and bolder while the zeds are more subdued, no matter thier coloring.

At five minis a week it should take about a year... assuming I never miss a day. What have I done?

Did you hear that?!

While I fiddle with the layout and all I've set a start day for the One Zed a Day project, Monday, July 27th.

Don't worry, everything's gonna be alright.

I’m creating this journal as a way to restart my painting efforts. I have over two hundred unpainted 28mm zombie and survivor miniatures and I’ve only painted three zombies so far. I doubt anyone will run across this log accidently, but if you do welcome. I’m not going to try and track down the maker of every mini, but if one catches your eye , let me know and I’ll tell you who made it if I can.

Every weekday I'll post a new painted zombie. I'd say I'll paint one every day, but with my schedule and life and all it's easier to paint when I can and try to build up a zombie buffer.

I'm not a great painter and if you have any tips or tricks I'm always eager to improve my mini painting skills.
